Introduction

##Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is a novel set in the 1950s in the fictional town of Barkley Cove, North Carolina. The story follows the life of protagonist Kya Clark, who is nicknamed “the Marsh Girl” because she lives in a shack in the marshes outside of Barkley Cove. The novel deals with themes of grief, loss, love, and betrayal.

Background

Delia Owens’s debut novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, has been on the New York Times bestseller list for more than fifty weeks. The book has been translated into forty languages, and was adapted into a film that is currently in production.

The story follows Kya Clark, a young woman who is believed to be responsible for the death of her boyfriend, Chase Andrews. Kya is an outsider in her small town in North Carolina, and she must fight to clear her name.

Owens was born in Murdocksville, North Carolina, and she grew up in Decatur, Georgia. She received a B.A. from the University of Georgia, and an M.S. from the University of New Hampshire. She has worked as a research scientist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and she is a member of the National Audubon Society.

Characters

The book’s protagonist is Kya Clark, nicknamed the “Marsh Girl.” She is a young woman who has spent most of her life alone in the marshes of North Carolina, where she makes her living as a crabber. Kya is an uneducated girl with a love of nature and a talent for drawing. Throughout the novel, she is portrayed as a creature of the marsh, more comfortable in the company of animals than with humans.

The novel follows Kya’s life from her childhood in the 1950s through her adulthood in the 1970s. She grows up in poverty and isolation, and her only human contact is with her abusive father and her older brother, Jodie. Jodie is the only person who shows Kya any kindness, and when he leaves home to join the military, Kya is truly alone.

Themes

There are several themes in Kya’s story. One theme is survival. Kya has to find ways to survive in the marsh on her own. She does this by learning how to fish, hunt, and grow her own food. Another theme is loneliness. Kya is lonely because she is alone most of the time and does not have any friends. A third theme is love. Kya falls in love with Tate, but she is not sure if he feels the same way about her.
