George R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire
George R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire is a fantasy novel series that has been adapted into the popular HBO television series Game of Thrones. The book series is ongoing, with six out of a projected seven novels having been published. The seventh book is currently in progress.
The History of Westeros
The Song of Ice and Fire book series, which Game of Thrones is based on, is actually named after the first two books in the series – A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. The titles of the later books in the series are taken from key events that happen within them. However, the full title of the Song of Ice and Fire book series is A Song of Ice and Fire.
George R.R. Martin, who wrote the books, has stated that he wanted the title to reflect the fact that the story is about two different elements – ice (the Wall and everything north of it) and fire (the War of the Five Kings). The “song” part of the title refers to a recurring theme in all five books – that songs can be used as a form of history, as a way to remember things that have happened in the past.
The Targaryen Kings
##The Game of Thrones television show is based on the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin. The Targaryen kings play a major role in both the books and the TV show, and are a fascinating part of the world that Martin has created. If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, or if you’re just curious about the books that inspired the show, here’s a look at the Targaryen kings and what they’re all about.
The Targaryen dynasty was founded by Aegon I Targaryen, who conquered six of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros with his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys. After their deaths, their son Aerys II ruled for many years, until he was overthrown by Robert Baratheon during Robert’s Rebellion. The last Targaryen king was Aerys’s son, Jaehaerys II; Jaehaerys’s grandson, Viserys III, died without issue, so Jaehaerys’s great-grandson Aegon IV became king. Aegon IV’s children were Daenerys (mother of Viserys and Rhaegar), Rhaegar (father of Jon Snow), Viserys (father of Daenerys), and Aegon V (father of Aerys II).
Aegon V was a good king who tried to reform many aspects of Targaryen rule, but he was ultimately unsuccessful. His son Aerys II became known as the “Mad King” because of his erratic behavior; Aerys II was eventually killed by Jaime Lannister during Jaime’s attempt to stop him from burning King’s Landing to the ground.
The last Targaryen king was Jaehaerys II’s great-grandson Aegon IV; Aegon IV was succeeded by his son Aerys II. Aegon IV’s children were Daenerys (mother of Viserys and Rhaegar), Rhaegar (father of Jon Snow), Viserys (father of Daenerys), and Aegon V (father of Aerys II).
The Battle of the Blackwater
The Battle of the Blackwater is the third book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. It was published on July 12, 2000. The book is 1,036 pages long and is composed of 62 chapters. The novel covers the events of The War of the Five Kings, which takes place after the death of Robert Baratheon and before the death of Robb Stark.
The War of the Five Kings
The War of the Five Kings is a fantasy novel by George R. R. Martin, published in 2011. It is the first novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was later adapted into the HBO television series Game of Thrones.
The book tells the story of the war of succession that follows the death of King Robert Baratheon, who left no surviving heir. The five kings are:
-Joffrey Baratheon, King Robert’s eldest son and heir, whose mother is Cersei Lannister, Queen Regent and Protector of the Realm;
-Stannis Baratheon, King Robert’s younger brother and rightful heir;
-Renly Baratheon, Lord Paramount of Storm’s End and Stannis’ younger brother;
-Balon Greyjoy, Lord Reaper of Pyke and self-proclaimed King of the Iron Islands; and
-Robb Stark, Lord Paramount of the North and Warden of the East, who declares himself King in the North.
The Wildlings
The Wildlings are a group of people who live beyond the Wall in Game of Thrones. They are also known as the Free Folk. In the books, they are an ancient race who were forced to relocate south of the Wall by the First Men. The Wildlings are a diverse group of people, with many different cultures and customs.
The White Walkers
The GoT is based on the White Walkers, a race of formerly human warriors who turned into zombie-like creatures.
Daenerys Targaryen
The character of Daenerys Targaryen is based upon the historical figure Tomyris, known as the “Warrior Queen”. She was the leader of the Massagetae, a Central Asian nomadic tribe, who fought Cyrus the Great, king of the Achaemenid Empire.
Jon Snow
Jon Snow is the bastard son of Ned Stark, the lord of Winterfell. He was raised alongside his trueborn siblings at Winterfell and always felt like an outsider. When he was just fourteen, Jon ran away from home and joined the Night’s Watch, a brotherhood of men who guard the wall that protects the Seven Kingdoms from the wildlings who live beyond it. At Castle Black, Jon quickly proves himself to be a brave and capable fighter. He is eventually named Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, but his leadership is threatened by many enemies, both within and without the Wall.
